PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Red lentils and yellow lentils with a blend of ground and tempering spices to make a classic Tadka Dal.

Serves 3-4

This pouch contains:

1.    Red lentils, yellow lentils and ground spices (160g)

2.   Whole tempering Spices (20g)

You will need:

1 pouch Tadka Dal blend

6 small cherry tomatoes, finely chopped

1/2 onion, finely sliced

2 cloves garlic, peeled and finely chopped

1 inch piece of ginger, peeled and finely chopped

4-5 tbsp oil

700 ml water

2 tbsp fresh coriander, chopped, to garnish

COOKING INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Open the pouch and remove the small clear pack of whole tempering spices. Set aside for later. Empty the remaining contents into a large non-stick or heavy-based pan.

2. Add the chopped tomatoes and water. Stir well and leave to soak for 1 hour.

3. Place the pan on a medium heat and bring to the boil, uncovered.

4. Reduce to a gentle simmer, cover, and cook for 15 mins. 

5. Lightly mash the dal with a potato masher or the back of a flat spoon until smooth and creamy.

6. In a small frying pan, heat the oil over a medium heat. Test with a tiny pinch of spice – if it sizzles straight away, the oil is ready.

7. Add the tempering spices from the clear pouch and let them sizzle for 5–10 seconds.

8. Add the onion, garlic and ginger. Fry until deep golden brown.

8. Pour this tempering mixture into the cooked dal and stir.

9. Garnish with fresh coriander. Cover and simmer for 2 minutes before serving.

Top Tip: To make Spinach Dal, add 100g finely chopped spinach to the golden-brown onions. Combine well and cook for 2-3 mins on low heat.
